Freeing a dream…

For very many years, I had the same haunting dream. I was running up a flight of stairs and somebody was pursuing me. I reached my home on the top of the stairs, rushed in and slammed the door.

There would be pounding on the door as whoever or whatever was chasing me had caught up with me. I would press the door with my body as hard as I could, but the door would be moving with the superior force from the other side and I knew I was fighting a losing battle. The door would half-open and I would spring up from my bed in fright…

This was a regular pattern, and the dream always stopped at that point. I tried everything I could. I slept after reading something nice or I tried to sleep early or I kept some holy books under my pillow. Nothing seemed to have much of an effect as the dream was well-entrenched in my psyche.

By this time, I knew that this dream was a product of the insecurities of my childhood and had no role to play in my present life. I decided if I had to break this vicious seed of a past insecurity I had to confront it within my dream. I told myself every night that if I had that dream, I would fight it.

One fine night, when the dream had played out it’s now well-known script and when I had reached the point of the door being pushed…I suddenly stopped pushing! I pulled open the door (in my dream) and looked out…there was nothing…I then shouted out – who is there? The stairway was deserted. I walked down the stairs. It was empty…and I woke up with a feeling of relief and intense happiness.

That was the last time, I ever had that dream.
